SABCS 2023 | Breast cancer prevention: hormonal treatments and emerging strategies

Seema Khan, MD, Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, IL, discusses breast cancer prevention research presented at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) congress in San Antonio, TX. The poster discussion session focused on hormonal treatments for high-risk or breast cancer history women, concluding that while estrogen and progesterone use after breast cancer treatment may slightly increase recurrence risk, they can be considered for short-term relief of severe symptoms. Additionally, experimental findings highlighted new prevention strategies, such as promising results with retinoic acid receptor agonists and ongoing research into vaccines designed to prevent breast cancer. Prof. Khan emphasizes the rapid progress in preventive ideas, acknowledging the need for clinical translation but expressing optimism about the encouraging developments in breast cancer prevention. This interview took place at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) congress in San Antonio, TX.
