Satoshi Fukushima, MD, PhD, Kumamoto University, Kumamoto, Japan, discusses differences in melanoma subtype and drug efficacy between Western countries and East Asia, highlighting the need for region-specific guidelines. Dr Fukushima notes that meta-analysis from Japanese retrospective observational study yielded different results, concluding that dual checkpoint blockade does not extend overall survival and are outweighed by adverse effects, recommending PD-1 monotherapy as a first-line treatment for BRAF wild-type melanoma in Japan. This interview took place at the 11th World Congress of Melanoma and 21st EADO Congress in Athens, Greece.
