ASCO 2025 | Neoadjuvant therapy for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma: a promising approach

Kevin Harrington, MD, PhD, FRCP, FRCR, FRSB, The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, comments on the potential advantages of neoadjuvant therapy for cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) compared to adjuvant therapy. Prof. Harrington highlights that neoadjuvant immunotherapy can maximize anti-tumor immune responses, improve local control, and prevent systemic disease recurrence, particularly in patients with difficult-to-operate tumors. This approach may also make surgery more feasible and better tolerated by patients, and may lead to future studies investigating various combinations of immune checkpoint blockers and chemotherapy for high-risk disease. This interview took place during the 2025 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Meeting in Chicago, IL.
