ESSO 44 | Prophylactic CRS and HIPEC in appendiceal adenocarcinoma after perforated appendicitis
Marc Pocard, MD, PhD, Hospital Lariboisière Department of Visceral Cancer and Endocrine Surgery, Paris, France, discusses the potential benefits of prophylactic cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in patients with appendiceal adenocarcinoma discovered during acute perforated appendicitis. Prof. Pocard highlights that a national study in France, conducted by the BIGRENAPE group, suggests that prophylactic HIPEC may decrease the risk of peritoneal recurrence in this specific situation, with a significant difference in recurrence rates between patients who received HIPEC and those who did not. This interview took place at the 44th Congress of the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO 44) in Gothenburg, Sweden.
