ESTRO 2026 | Can IMRT alone be used for higher-risk oropharyngeal cancer?

Satoaki Nakamura, MD, PhD, FJCR, Kansai Medical University, Hirakata, Japan, explores whether intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) alone could be used for intermediate or higher-risk oropharyngeal cancer. The JCOG1208 trial of IMRT alone carefully selected only early-stage patients, and Dr Nakamura cautions against applying these results to patients with bulky tumors, advanced nodal disease or other high-risk features. This interview took place at the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology 2026 Congress in Stockholm, Sweden.
