Academic history

Erika Hamilton, MD, first received her undergraduate BSc degree specializing in Neuroscience at Washington and Lee University, Lexington, VA. After receiving a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, she headed on to complete her medical qualification and residency at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC. Additionally, she completed her fellowship training specializing in oncology at Duke University, Durham, NC.

Dr Hamilton is currently the Executive Chair on the Breast Cancer Research Executive Committee at the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center, Nashville, TN. She initially joined the Sarah Cannon Cancer Center on the Breast and Gynecologic Program as an investigator in drug development for women’s cancers and has been a director of breast cancer research since 2015. Dr Hamilton was chosen for the ASCO Leadership Development Class for the 2021-2022 period, having previously chaired the ASCO Scientific Committee for Metastatic Breast Cancer during 2019-2020. She is set to become the ASCO Scientific Chair in 2025 and will co-chair the Scientific Committee for the ESMO Breast Cancer Meeting from 2023 to 2025.

Dr Hamilton is particularly keen on personalized medicine strategies for treating breast cancer, so that each patient receives tailored therapies based on their unique genetic profile and tumor characteristics, ultimately improving treatment outcomes and quality of life.
