ESMO GI 2026 | FRESCO-2: sex-based subgroup analysis of fruquintinib in pre-treated mCRC

Rocio Garcia-Carbonero, MD, PhD, University Hospital 12 De Octubre, Madrid, Spain, explores a post-hoc subgroup analysis of the FRESCO-2 study (NCT04322539), examining whether patient sex influences the efficacy and safety of fruquintinib, a selective VEGFR inhibitor, in previously treated metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Fruquintinib improved overall and progression-free survival over placebo in both males and females, with no significant interaction between survival benefit and sex after accounting for differences in subsequent therapy use. Safety findings were generally consistent across sexes, supporting comparable use of fruquintinib regardless of patient sex. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Gastrointestinal Cancer 2026 Congress in Munich, Germany.
