Alan Sihoe, MBBChir, FRCSEd, FCSHK, FHKAM, The University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam, Hong Kong, outlines the upcoming technologies and challenges in surgery for lung cancer management. In the last few years, major randomized trials have demonstrated that segmentectomy has a similar survival benefit to lobectomy which has been established as a standard of care surgery for lung cancer. As segmentectomy removes a smaller piece of the lung, the procedure is beneficial in preserving lung function and can also be recommended for patients who are usually ineligible for lobectomy, such as those with multifocal lung cancer. Dr Sihoe highlights that the current challenges in surgery include a lack of multidisciplinary collaboration, and in order to treat lung cancer effectively, multiple therapy modalities must be utilized. This interview took place at the 2023 World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) in Singapore, Singapore.
