ESMO 2026 | Sequencing hormone therapy in high-risk localized prostate cancer

Tamim Niazi, McGill University, Montreal, Canada, comments on the sequencing of androgen receptor pathway inhibitors (ARPIs) in localized prostate cancer management, noting that the introduction of agents such as abiraterone and darolutamide based on trials like STAMPEDE (NCT00268476) and DASL-HiCaP trial (ANZUP1801; NCT04136353) does not substantially alter treatment sequencing strategies. Patients with localized prostate cancer, including those at very high risk, rarely progress while receiving treatment, and progression typically necessitates reassessment and initiation of doublet therapy based on disease characteristics at that time. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 Congress in Madrid, Spain.
