Sophie Wooldrik, MD, Sint Franciscus Gasthuis Rotterdam, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, discusses the prognostic ability of preoperative biopsies in small breast tumors. Minimally invasive treatments reduce patient treatment morbidity and improve quality of life, but eliminate surgical specimens that are used to identify the need for systemic therapy. Core needle biopsies present an alternative diagnostic tool, with a retrospective comparison with surgical specimens demonstrating good congruence for grading, size, and only a slightly increased risk of underestimating the need for systemic therapy. This interview took place at the 14th European Breast Cancer Conference (EBCC) in Milan, Italy.
