ELCC 2025 | Is segmentectomy suitable for non-peripheral early-stage NSCLC?
Paul van Schil, MD, PhD, University Hospital Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium, discusses the role of segmentectomy for non-peripheral early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). For small, peripheral tumors smaller than 2 centimeters, segmentectomy or sublobar resection yields similar results to lobectomy, but the feasibility of segmentectomy depends on the tumor’s location, with peripheral tumors being easier to treat than centrally located ones. Asian surgeons are also more experienced in performing anatomical segmentectomies, while European surgeons may prefer lobectomy in challenging cases. This interview took place at the European Lung Cancer Congress (ELCC) 2025 in Paris, France.
