ESMO 2024 | TILs and OS in HER2+ early breast cancer: 10-year updated analysis of the ShortHER trial

Maria Vittoria Dieci, MD, University of Padova, Padova, Italy, discusses the role of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) in patients with early human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-positive breast cancer who were enrolled in the ShortHER trial (NCT00629278). The analysis showed that a higher level of TILs was significantly associated with both distant disease-free survival and overall survival in multivariable models. The study also found that patients with high TILs had a significantly better outcome than patients with low TILs, regardless of the treatment arm. Finally, the data confirmed a significant interaction between TILs and the treatment arm, indicating that patients with low TILs benefit more from a longer duration of treatment, while patients with high TILs may benefit more from a shorter treatment duration. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
