ELCC 2022 | The surgical management of lung metastases from CRC

Elena Prisciandaro, MD, University Hospitals Leuven, Leuven, Belgium, talks on an investigation into the surgical management of lung metastases, focusing on lung metastases from colorectal cancer (CRC). The study involved the recruitment of patients from two major centers, the European Institute of Oncology in Milan and the University Hospital Leuven, including 297 patients that were operated on for the treatment of lung metastases from CRC. No differences were observed in baseline characteristics between the two centers, indicating a common pathway of selecting patients for lung metastasectomy. Differences in the overall survival (OS) of patients were highlighted, including extent of resection and the use of adjuvant therapies for treating metastases whereby the use of adjuvant therapy following lung surgery significantly benefited OS. A propensity score revealed performing anatomical resections and lymph node dissections additionally benefited OS. Factors influencing the prognosis of patients was also explored in a multivariant analysis. This interview took place during the virtual European Lung Cancer Congress 2022.
