Dirk Arnold, MD, PhD, Asklepios Tumorzentrum Hamburg, Hamburg, Germany, discusses insights from the ATOMIC trial (NCT02912559), evaluating the benefit of atezolizumab with mFOLFOX6 chemotherapy versus mFOLFOX6 alone in patients with microsatellite instability-high/deficient mismatch repair (MSI-H/dMMR) colon cancer. Disease-free survival was improved by 50% in the combination arm, making atezolizumab with mFOLFOX6 a global standard of care regimen. Further exploratory retrospective analysis investigated the relative contribution of immunotherapy and chemotherapy by comparing outcomes in patients who received the full course of mFOLFOX6 with those who stopped mFOLFOX6 early. Patients who received the full course of mFOLFOX6 showed a greater benefit from the addition of atezolizumab. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Gastrointestinal Cancer 2026 Congress in Munich, Germany.
