ESMO GI 2026 | EMERALD-3 & EMERALD-1 reshape TACE strategies in HCC at ESMO GI 2026

Silvio Ken Garattini, MD, Azienda Sanitaria Universitaria Friuli Centrale, Udine, Italy, discusses the results of the EMERALD-3 (NCT05301842) and EMERALD-1 (NCT03778957) clinical trials for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), highlighting the progression-free survival benefits of sorafenib plus lenvatinib and transarterial chemoembolisation (TACE), as well as the combination of durvalumab, bevacizumab, and TACE. While overall survival data are still pending for the EMERALD-3 trial, the results suggest that sorafenib plus lenvatinib could be a viable option to add to TACE, particularly for patients with intermediate-risk HCC. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) Gastrointestinal Cancer 2026 Congress in Munich, Germany.
