ESMO 2024 | The need for enhanced biomarkers in metastatic colorectal cancer

Marco Germani, MD, FRCP, University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy, comments on the limitations of RAS/BRAF profiling and next-generation sequencing (NGS) in capturing the complexity of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). Patients are expected to have a favorable prognosis often experience poor outcomes or rapid resistance to first-line therapies, highlighting the need for improved biomarkers. While compressed genome expression profiling may help refine understanding in these patients, established biomarkers like BRAF still play a crucial role. Thus, mRNA profiling is important to better predict responses and outcomes in this heterogeneous disease. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
