ESMO 2024 | Advances and challenges in treatments for hepatocellular carcinoma
Markus Peck-Radosavljevic, MD, Medical University of Vienna, Vienna, Austria, highlights the evolving landscape of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) treatment, with pivotal trials shaping current approaches. While the early promise of the Phase III IMbrave050 trial (NCT04102098) in improving progression-free survival (PFS) with atezolizumab and bevacizumab was not sustained, positive outcomes from the Phase III LEAP-012 (NCT04246177) and EMERALD-1 (NCT03778957) trials suggest the potential of triple therapy in certain HCC patients. Long-term data from the Phase III HIMALAYA (NCT03298451) and CheckMate 9DW (NCT04039607) trials further affirm the benefits of immune checkpoint inhibitors, especially in dual immuno-oncology (IO) therapies. These findings underscore ongoing innovation in HCC management. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
