ASCO 2026 | Understanding the obesity paradox: future directions for immunotherapy in GI cancers
Kushal Kriplani, MBBS, of SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, Brooklyn, NY, discusses the obesity paradox in patients with gastrointestinal (GI) cancer receiving immunotherapy (IO), whereby patients with higher BMI appear to experience better outcomes. Dr Kriplani suggests that prospective studies with controlled cohorts of patients with normal and obese BMI are needed to validate this association and investigate the biological effects of obesity on cellular function. Such research could lead to new strategies for enhancing the efficacy of immunotherapy. This interview took place during the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Meeting in Chicago, IL.
