BTOG 2022 | Integrating smoking cessation programs in lung cancer screening

Rachael Murray, PhD, University of Nottingham, Nottingham, UK, discusses the implementation of smoking cessation programs in screening patients for lung cancer. The Yorkshire Enhanced Stop Smoking (YESS) study (NCT03750110) demonstrated that an opt out smoking cessation program was effective in reducing smoking rates in people. Smokers received behavioral therapy, pharmacotherapy, or e-cigarettes, as well as personalized therapy in the form of photographs of lung and heart scans. A promising 4 week quite rate was reported and over 80% of eligible patients attended, indicating high engagement and there was positive feedback on the available treatments. This interview took place at the 20th Annual British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) Conference 2022
