ASCO 2024 | Phase III EMERALD-1: bevacizumab and durvalumab with TACE improves PFS in unresectable HCC

Stephen Lam Chan, MD, FRCP, Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China, discusses the Phase III EMERALD-1 study (NCT03778957) as a potentially groundbreaking investigation for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma. The study reveals that combining bevacizumab and durvalumab with transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) significantly improves progression-free survival. Subgroup analyses indicate that benefits extend across various tumor burdens, hepatic functions, etiologies, and geographical regions. This combination therapy could become a new treatment option for patients undergoing TACE, with the added systemic treatments enhancing progression-free survival. Additionally, the safety analysis confirms that this regimen is well-tolerated without significant toxicity. This interview took place during the 2024 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Meeting in Chicago, IL.
