APCCC 2024 | Challenges and advances in prostate cancer screening and biopsy in Africa

Onyeanunam Ekeke, MBBS, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt, Nigeria, discusses the challenges in prostate cancer screening and biopsy in Africa. Limited access to advanced imaging like prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET) scans is a significant issue. Ultrasound is most commonly used, while computed tomography (CT) and bone scans are scarce. MRI before biopsy and MRI-guided biopsies are recommended, but ultrasound-guided biopsies are the standard. In some areas, digital biopsies are still used. Repeat biopsies may be necessary for high prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels or unclear results, with imaging, biomarkers, and genetics improving accuracy. This interview took place at the 2024 Advanced Prostate Cancer Consensus Conference (APCCC) in Lugano, Switzerland.
