BTOG 2024 | Managing lung cancer in ILD patients and implementing ctDNA testing in the NHS

Alastair Greystoke, PhD, MBChB, MRCP, Newcastle University/Northern Centre for Cancer Care, Newcastle, UK, discusses a session he chaired on interstitial lung disease (ILD) and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) at BTOG 2024. The session provided a comprehensive overview of ILD, highlighting the higher incidence of lung cancer in these patients and the challenges in treatment due to their comorbidities. A key insight was the complexity of ILD, comprising 200 different diseases, necessitating tailored management strategies. The session also discussed the limited existing data, predominantly from Asia, and the need for UK-specific studies. Additionally, the session covered the national implementation of ctDNA testing in the NHS, detailing the practical challenges and significant benefits, such as reduced time to treatment and fewer repeat biopsies. This interview took place at the BTOG 2024 congress in Belfast, UK.
