WCLC 2024 | Assessing the increased rates of advanced lung cancer in young adults

Filiz Oezkan, MD, West German Cancer Center, Essen, Germany, discusses findings from a study on lung cancer in patients aged 45 or younger, diagnosed at the West German Cancer Center from 2019 to 2023. The study examines the distinct characteristics of lung cancer in this age group, including a higher prevalence of non-smokers, advanced disease at diagnosis, neuroendocrine differentiation, and driver oncogenes such as ALK and EGFR. These findings suggest a need for increased awareness and potentially different screening approaches for younger patients to improve early detection and outcomes. This interview took place at the 2024 World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) in San Diego, CA.
