WCLC 2024 | The role of complete resection and clear margins in thymus cancer surgery

Paul van Schil, MD, PhD, University Hospital Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium, discusses the critical nature of achieving complete resection in thymus cancer surgery, emphasizing that that obtaining clear margins around the tumor is essential for optimal outcomes. If the resection is incomplete, especially in cases where the tumor has invaded surrounding structures, postoperative radiotherapy may be considered. However, without complete resection, the prognosis is generally poor. Some patients may also experience recurrent disease in the mediastinum or pleura, which may complicate management and significantly worsen the prognosis. This interview took place at the 2024 World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) in San Diego, CA.
