Jan Theys, PhD, Maastricht University, Maastricht, Netherlands, highlights the use of different bacterial strains in cancer therapy, such as facultatively anaerobic bacteria like Salmonella and E. coli, as well as strictly anaerobic strains like Clostridium. Both wild-type and engineered bacteria expressing therapeutic proteins are being tested in preclinical settings and ongoing clinical trials, showing promise in targeted tumor treatment through their interaction with the tumor microenvironment. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
