ASCO 2025 | An analysis of disparities in federal funding across cancer types

Suneel Kamath, MD, Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Institute, Cleveland, OH, comments on a retrospective analysis of NIH and Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) cancer research funding (2013–2022), highlighting disparities across cancer types relative to incidence, mortality, and race. While funding correlated strongly with cancer incidence, alignment with mortality was limited. Underfunded cancers such as lung, colorectal, liver, and uterine tended to have fewer clinical trials, with many affecting populations with higher disease burdens among Black patients. These findings underscore how funding gaps may hinder progress in high-mortality, underserved cancers. This interview took place during the 2025 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Meeting in Chicago, IL.
