BTOG 2026 | Developments in the PRINCE & QUARTZ LUNG trials for lung cancer

Matthew Hatton, MBChB, MSc, FRCP, FRCR, University of Sheffield, Sheffield, UK, highlights the current status of the PRINCE (ISRCTN17123858) and QUARTZ LUNG (ISRCTN52137148) trials, noting that recruitment targets are slightly behind schedule due to a limited number of participating centers and lower-than-expected recruitment rates at existing centers. Changes are being made to the trial protocols, including the eligibility of patients with stage three disease for PRINCE and the expansion of QUARTZ LUNG to second-line treatment for patients with no other systemic treatment options. This interview took place at the 2026 British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) congress in Edinburgh, UK.

So at the moment we’re doing okay. I suspect our report would say could do better. So we’re a little bit behind on recruitment targets. One of our issues is that we haven’t yet got a full number of centres that we’re hoping to recruit, so we’re certainly looking for new centres to come on board and help us with the trial. And the other is that those centres that are on board are slightly behind on their recruitment rates. So we are making some changes to the trial protocol. So we are now allowing patients with stage three disease to enter Taurus, those patients for whom there isn’t a radical or potentially curative treatment option. Clearly for those patients who have that option, that’s what they should be getting. But for those patients, there’s probably quite a large-ish cohort of those patients who don’t have that option, so they can come into Taurus. And in terms of quartz lung, the other big change we’ve made is we’ve opened it up to second-line treatment. So those patients who’ve had their first-line systemic treatments who have unfortunately progressed or relapsed, they would be potentially eligible for quartz lung at that point if they’ve got no other systemic treatment options open to them.
