AACR 2026 | Challenges & emerging therapies in HPV-independent head & neck cancer

Barbara Burtness, MD, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT, discusses the challenges of treating HPV-independent head and neck cancer, which has a worse prognosis than HPV-associated cancer, and highlights the limitations of current therapies, such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and cetuximab. EGFR-directed bispecific antibodies, such as petosemtamab, bintrafusp, and amivantamab are emerging to address adaptive resistance mechanisms and improve treatment outcomes. This interview took place at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting 2026 in San Diego, CA.
