ESMO 2026 | iFOCUS: histotripsy boosting immune checkpoint inhibition in solid tumors

Karijn Suijkerbuijk, MD, PhD, UMC Utrecht, Utrecht, The Netherlands, describes first results from the Phase I iFOCUS study (NCT06524570), which evaluated histotripsy, a focused ultrasound technique that mechanically fractionates tumor tissue, combined with ipilimumab and nivolumab in heavily pretreated patients with metastatic solid tumors. The combination was safe and well tolerated, with excellent procedural tolerability and no serious adverse events related to histotripsy. Early systemic responses were observed, suggesting potential to induce systemic treatment response. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 Congress in Madrid, Spain.
