ESMO 2026 | Standard treatment for locally advanced cervical cancer and future options
Domenica Lorusso, MD, PhD, Fondazione IRCCS National Cancer Institute of Milan, Milan, Italy, discusses the current and future options for improving survival in locally advanced cervical cancer, highlighting that the standard treatment is concurrent chemoradiation with modern radiotherapy, and that the addition of immunotherapy has increased overall survival for stage III and IV disease. Dr Lorusso notes that this combined approach has become the new standard for these stages, while concurrent chemoradiation remains the standard for other situations, resulting in a cure rate of about 75% of patients. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2026 Congress in Madrid, Spain.
