Umberto Malapelle, PhD, University of Naples Federico II, Naples, Italy, evaluates the emerging role of liquid biopsies in detecting lung cancer and possible limitations in its clinical implementation. While liquid biopsies can improve and expedite early detection, especially with newer techniques such as next-generation sequencing (NGS), specificity remains an issue. In addition to circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA), other molecular markers such as methylation and circulating tumor cells (CTCs) will help increase the efficacy of liquid biopsies. This interview took place at the 2024 World Conference on Lung Cancer (WCLC) in San Diego, CA.
