ESMO 2024 | Investigating PD-L1 expression as a biomarker in anal cancer trials

Dominik Modest, MD, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany, discusses the challenges of using PD-L1 expression as a biomarker in anal cancer. Although PD-L1 is a potential marker, data from ongoing studies have yet to confirm its utility. In a trial with 308 patients, the potential for subdividing patient groups based on PD-L1 expression leads to small sample sizes, making meaningful correlations difficult. Dr. Modest emphasizes that such findings would likely be hypothesis-generating rather than definitive. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
