Immunotherapies currently lack a clear role in anal cancer treatment. In this interview, Dominik Modest, MD, Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Berlin, Germany, discusses the use of checkpoint inhibitors in anal cancer, which when used in monotherapy cohorts, have shown mixed efficacy with varied patient responses. The recent POD1UM-303 trial (NCT04472429), focused on pre-treated patients, showing moderate but promising results. This suggests the potential for checkpoint inhibitors, combined with chemotherapy, to become a new standard, particularly for non-metastatic or unresectable cases, raising important questions about earlier-stage treatments. This interview took place at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) 2024 Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
