ASCO 2024 | Comparing the JCOG1109 and ESOPEC trials in esophageal cancer

Ken Kato, MD, PhD, National Cancer Center Hospital East, Tokyo, Japan, discusses critical factors in selecting treatment for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Results from the ESOPEC trial (NCT02509286), comparing neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and perioperative triplet chemotherapy, align with the JCOG1109 trial (NCT02188699). Findings indicate that neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy does not improve survival compared to the triplet docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil (DCF) regimen, which enhances resection and survival rates. The role of immune checkpoint inhibitors in combination with chemotherapy is also examined. This interview took place during the 2024 ASCO Meeting in Chicago, IL.
