Nicholas Steve Phillips, MD, PhD, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN, comments on structural brain aging in childhood cancer survivors. Survivors were assessed using clinical MRI exams. Results showed that childhood cancer survivors experienced accelerated brain aging based on the BrainAGE score, which was associated with neurocognitive impairments. Accelerated brain age has been linked to late morbidities and mortalities in non-cancer populations. The findings suggest that brain age, a surrogate biomarker, could potentially predict cognitive decline and improve early detection of dementia risk. Additionally, the study highlights the risk of cranial radiation in female cancer survivors under the age of 10.
