Valerie Weaver, PhD, University of California, San Francisco, CA, discusses the role of the glycocalyx in tumor fibrosis and subsequent evasion of immune cells. Changes in cell metabolism, which increases fibrosis has been found to alter sugar modifications and increase the presence of sialoglycans in the glycocalyx of tumor cells. The subsequent changes in the glycocalyx result in differential signaling patterns and suppression of immune cell activity, as well as immune evasion in the tumor. This interview took place at the 37th Annual Meeting of the Society for Immunotherapy in Cancer (SITC 2022) in Boston, MA.
