Piotr Rutkowski, MD, PhD, Maria Sklodowska-Curie Memorial Cancer Center and Institute of Oncology, Warsaw, Poland, discusses the key takeaways from a session on new developments in melanoma diagnosis and treatment, highlighting advancements in gene expression profiles to improve prognosis and reduce the need for sentinel biopsy, as well as promising new treatments for uveal melanoma, including tebentafusp and targeted therapies. Prof. Rutkowski also touches on the evolving role of surgical approaches in melanoma treatment, including the potential to limit or eliminate lymph node dissection in certain cases, particularly with the use of neoadjuvant therapy. This interview took place at the 44th Congress of the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO 44) in Gothenburg, Sweden.
