BTOG 2023 | Understanding the link between mental health and cancer to optimize patient care

Asanga Fernando, MA, MRCPsych, St George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, London, UK, discusses the assessment and management of a variety of mental health conditions linked with cancers. Patients with lung cancer are a high-risk group in terms of mental health. Data shows that lung cancer, upper gastrointestinal, and head and neck cancer patients make up most cancer linked suicides. Furthermore, many patients with cancer and depression do not receive adequate mental health support. Early identification and treatment of mental health issues have the scope to also benefit the patient’s cancer journey. The combination of awareness and clinical assessment are key in forming immersive techniques of training healthcare professionals in order to improve patient care. This interview took place at the British Thoracic Oncology Group (BTOG) Annual Conference 2023 in Belfast, UK.
