ISOPP 2021 | The pharmacist’s role in CAR-T cell therapy

Joan Vinent Genestar, PharmD, BCOP, BCPPS, Sant Joan de Déu Hospital, Barcelona, Spain, describes the role of the pharmacist during hospital administration of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy, which is a complex process involving a multi-disciplinary healthcare team. Pharmacists play a key role in governance to ensure the safe and secure handling of these therapies, as well as patient selection and procurement, transport, storage, thawing and preparation of CAR T-cell therapies before administration. They are also responsible for the preparation and dispensation of bridging chemotherapy, as well as medication used in the management of toxicities associated with therapy. This interview took place during the International Society of Oncology Pharmacy Practitioners (ISOPP) 2021 Virtual Symposium.
