ASCO 2023 | Big data in oncology: challenges and solutions

Neil Shah, MBBS, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, NY, discusses a comprehensive pan-cancer oncology data model was developed using standard data definitions and industry-standard benchmarks. The team assembled 133 members from various disciplines to identify data domains that capture the patient journey. They leveraged existing oncology data models and developed a common data model with standard terms and disease-specific elements. The data was stored in a HIPAA-compliant database platform and utilized standard ontologies for data consistency. Data stewards were assigned for each tumor type, aiding in curator training and data quality. Interactive dashboards were created for QA and clinical engagement. The study highlights the feasibility of collecting comprehensive oncology data with institutional support, collaboration, and a dedicated QA team, leading to improved data quality and curation efficiency. This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2023 Annual Congress in Chicago, IL.
