WCCS 2022 | Early melanoma diagnosis to improve patient mortality

Susana Puig Sardá, MD, PhD, Hospital Clínic Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain, discusses early melanoma diagnosis and improving mortality. Due to the low incidence rate of melanoma in the general population, it has not yet been proven that kin cancer screening at the population level improves survival of melanoma and decreases mortality. However, early diagnosis of melanoma is considered to improve mortality in patients who are high-risk. European countries that have invested more money in healthcare have lower mortality compared to countries with lower investments in melanoma healthcare. Further, the prognosis of melanoma has been directly related with early diagnosis, thus if the population at risk can be accurately identified, survival outcomes of patients are predicted to improve. This interview took place at the 18th World Congress on Cancers of the Skin (WCCS 2022) in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
